Abstract

The portuguese and brazilian invasions during the nineteenth century left behind deep marks on a wide border area. at the same time they enhanced a strong warning in the uruguayan political level towards the menace of brazilian influence. a certain belief in a mythological concept of «homogeneous country» pushed the denial of that frontier culture, supposedly barbarian and antimodern. That denial enforced a prohibition of portuñol in public schools, in spite of the fact that the dialect is commonly used in the area. The military government brought down several myths and also questioned that supposed homogeneity. as we start to accept our diversity, attention begins to be given to the borders. These areas are seen not as defensive walls but as interchange areas of specific identity.
