On patency in accessing the depressive position

Life is thought to develop through the articulation of the schizo-paranoid and depressive positions —both always being implied. A series of sessions is presented as an example of some of the difficulties to reach a permeable access to the depressive relationship, a way out of the everyday relationship with the object. In the Introduction some aspects of the referential scheme followed by this
work are made explicit. One stresses the fact that a relationship is being analyzed, not an object, and that “pathologic” elements manifest themselves through modalities of the relationship. Following M. Klein it is assessed that analysis aims at a depressive separation implying reciprocate independence of analyzand and analyst —the condition for this separation being the solid
establishment of a good object in the analyzand and his consent to the analyst’s disposal of a good object of his own. That is to say, the resolution of the triangular situation. The relationship analyzed in this paper evolves round the projective
identification (schizo-paranoid modality of the relationship); this concept being given a wider meaning than the usual one in analytical literature and starting from the feeling that the assumed condition of the other person responds to something in oneself.
The sessions discussed in this paper refer to an examination situation. The analytical work here deals with the difficulties of the analyzand to show her feelings to her analyst. It is possible to take this example as an example also of the difficulties to allow the analyst to have his own ideas, to be somebody else. This process is considered to have envy as a pivot
