La comprensión e interpretación del simbolismo inconsciente, es uno de los instrumentos principales del psicólogo. Se ve a menudo enfrentado a la tarea de comprender y reconocer el significado, no sólo de un símbolo particular, sino también del proceso total de la formación de símbolos. Esto es especialmente aplicable al trabajo con pacientes que presentan una perturbación o inhibición de la formación o de la utilización de los símbolos, como ocurre, por ejemplo, en psicóticos o esquizoides.
