Getting surprised, still

This paper reflects about the surprise reaction experienced by the analyst in its countertransference . The author suggests that the surprise must not be misunderstood as the appearance of novelty insofar frequently what arises surprise is a repetition that can lead to the unexpected, functioning as a compass that can mobilize what had been kept immobized or stereotyped
along the course of analytic process. The ideas are illustrated by clinical material.
