Abstract

Alluding to its opposite Puget, J. and Wender, L, article done by on «Analyst and Patient in overlapping worlds» (1982), the author refers to the difficulties faced by the analyst when patients manifest conflict resulting from their «subjection» to worlds and codes that are foreign and unknown to the analyst in their functioning and standards, as well as directly conflicting with his own values and ideals. These clinical situations also challenge the ethical dimension of our practice. These stories, as well as those from the shared common area, tend to produce a traumatic reaction in the analyst, which results in a tendency to «get out of the transfer». From this perspective, it is questioned if what this article calls unshared worlds could be considered as what «overlapping world» calls a «moment of analytic eclipse». It is considered that, facing the temporary cessation of the analytical positioning, opportunities and internal resources will be at risk for the analyst. Through intensive work with his counter-transference, he can
recover his ability to think, having been suddenly weakened in his role because of the intensity of emotional and sensory reaction to the patient’s speech. It is both a necessary and essential to work with the countertransference, which, in spite of being one of the essential elements of the method, is particularly relevant in clinical situations nowadays. Following the proposals of René Kaës (1995) it is stated that in crisis situations the analyst’s preconscious is specially demanded, being indispensable
for a representational binding that favors the senses. This work also comprehends the thorough analysis of countertransference in the dynamics of the bi-personal field. To conclude, a clinical example is provided, in which Freud’s affirmation
that the quintessential repression is sexuality… and when its veil is lifted anguish arises… both in the patient and in the analyst.
