Abstract

As the title suggests the phenomenon of identity, as presented in the work of Fernando Pessoa and Alvaro Figueredo, is a literary configuration of the apparently divided or multiplied subject.
In the consciousness of the creators there is a linking focus out of which speech and representation arise. This guarantees the cohesion and coherence of the enunciation and the enunciated.
The creator‘s consciousness reveals a ground, a place of the self that is an isotopy. However one or several intermediate spaces appear that are something more than poetic connotation and metaphoric substitution. They are not ellipses but elocutionary voids where otherness is established.
There are times when the authorial self is a mask but although one does not know well what or who hides behind, it is always a facade of the one identity.
Identity is an experience of distinctiveness and solitariness, the self‘s thirst to be the support of the world, as in the Hercules myth.
However, it is an enigma or mystery of the subject, a part of the literary code. The artist can testify to identity but cannot explain it because identity is a diverse world, not a universe, but a simultaneous diverse existing.
Memory and identity are indissolubly bound together and for that reason, as in the case of these two poets, we could be facing an experiential memory geared to non-conventional artistic needs that do not fit any paradigm.
As a result, double or coupled, heterographs and heteronyms can be seen as dramatic and narrative simulations of the basic or founding self.
