From theory to ideology; problems

In a paper published towards 1956, Willy Baranger posed the problem as important as scarcely studied of the impingement of ideologies on psychoanalytic practice. In it he formulates and discusses the possibility of applying a rule he called “of ideological
abstention”, construed as a desacralisation of ideology, together with its limitations. Baranger’s contribution is reconsidered in the present study, highlighting the existence of a continuum ranging from idea and theory to ideology; this continuum passes through
the ideal and idealization (with the implied persecution), and must be understood as a continuum in the progression of acting out. Ideologization thus appears as an emergent in the psychoanalytical field and speaks of insuffiently cleared transferences and
countertransferences, leading to work on the borders of manipulation. This explains the importance of having to sustain the abstention rule and contain the tension its application implies.
