Aunque la literatura sobre historia del arte, la crítica y la estética tratan extensamente sobre el problema del estilo en sus muchas formas y contextos, el psicoanálisis está todavía por ocuparse de una “psicología del estilo”. El presente estudio no pretende llenar el hueco de la comprensión del estilo o tratar el problema multidisciplinario y enigmático del estilo artístico, excepto en lo que se refiere a aquellos aspectos que pueden ser de importancia para el tema tratado. Éste es más bien un intento preliminar para definir el problema general del estilo, su exploración como uno de los elementos de la personalidad, objeto de estudio psicoanalítico, y para sugerir algunas áreas en las cuales el psicoanálisis puede hacer una contribución al terna y rendir algún beneficio, tanto práctico como teórico, al ser realizado.
