Abstract

This paper revisits the article «Changes and no changes in the representation of self and others through images and metaphors» with the aim of exploring the scope and limitations of the three-level model (3-LM) for the clinical observation of psychic change. Based on a clinical case analyzed in a group setting by psychoanalysts from different countries, the paper explores the value of images and metaphors emerging in dreams as indicators of transformation in the analytic process. The study examines how certain dream images function as figurative organizers of subjective experience, allowing for the tracking of changes in the representation of the self, symbolization, and relationships with others. At the same time, it problematizes the clinical and epistemological status of metaphor, questioning its scope and limits in capturing psychic and relational transformations. Aspects in which changes occurred (symbolization, accessibility to one’s own internal states, loosening of avoidant defenses, conflict resolution) were identified, while it was observed that these changes were partial and nonhomogeneous, with more primary defensive nuclei persisting and coexisting alongside the progress achieved. Finally, it highlights the value of the 3-LM group setting as a space for thirdness and clinical pluralism, capable of broadening the understanding of the analytic process and contributing to a more nuanced description of the different levels of change.
