Abstract

The paper underscores the multiple senses of the notion of countertransference and suggests the convenience of considering it a signifier: open, as such, to the plurality of meanings that its use has been decanting in the history of our discipline. In a perspective that allows to open the breach between “what one says and what one wants to say” [Lacan, 1995] when an
analyst uses it to account for his practice, dodging the en-masse refutations that usually block interchange. Also wishing to promote working on our differences, the writer proposes to see countertransference and the wish of the analyst as two alternative responses to the same question. The question could be expressed in terms of an attempt to elucidate which should be the subjective implication of the analyst in order to respond adequately to the transferences of which he is the object. The paper overviews Lacan’s position regarding the countertransference, distinguishing two perspectives all along his teachings: on the one hand, a criticism to the imaginary glidings that it can induce; and on the other, a critical legitimation of the clinical testimonies of some
countertranferentialist colleagues, whose unconventional interventions he celebrates, though he takes some distance from the conceptualizations they use to support them. It is a perspective that meets his work on the concepts of the wish of the analyst and the analytic act. Finally, a brief clinical reference is introduced in order to outline the territory that some colleagues approach through the notion of countertransference, but which – following Lacan – the writer prefers to approach considering it in terms of the different modes of subjective implication of the analyst. The material offers testimony to a moment of uncalculated
hesitation in the neutrality of the analyst, and allows for the introduction of transferential consent. The paper leaves open the question about who or what (in the analyst) attends the appointment with the transference, when there is hesitation in his neutrality.
