Encopresis
Uncle Scrooge and the use of the symptom in the analytic process
Keywords:
encopresis, clinical material, psychoanalytic technique in children, psychoanalysis of childrenAbstract
This paper includes a clinical material, from one of the analysts, of the treatment of a six-year-old child who suffers from encopresis, and its discussion by the other analyst. The discussion of the material follows the protocol of presentation for clinical materials which is traditional in their Society of origin. In this case material, when the symptom of encopresis disappears, the analyst believes it is the time for deepening, even further, the work of analysis. However, the child’s parents are satisfied with the
cure, and discharge the child by putting an end to the treatment. This promotes a series of reflections on the nature of the analytic work performed, its reach and limits.
