«Precious», a Proposal for Change

Abstract

Using the film Precious as a starting point, the narrative is situated in the context of post-modern culture and the paper covers questions relating to the factors which may have influenced the processes of subjectivation in the young girl, who comes from a social nucleous whose origins are highly disfunctional. The paper reflects on incest, discriminating between the levels of phantasy, repression, the spoken word and the processes of simbolization on the one hand; and on the other hand the material act based on the inconsistency of the prohibition. Following the drift of thought, it analyzes the effects of fragmentation of societies´ view and of assigned roles, which go to reinforce the annulment of the condition of the subject, as well as those of the characteristics of the institutions which are responsible for the care of vulnerable young people. The central hypothesis which is made to explain change in this young person is the subjective value of belonging to a group which becomes a symbolic referent and by appropriation of the spoken word, which allows one to talk and think with, through and about significant others.
