In this essay, I examine the troubled home return of Ulysses, in Homer’s Odyssey, as well as the transformations in the notion of return in modernity. The changes in modern technologies of transport and communication have created new ways of anguish, caused by a feeling of non-belonging and the desire to be part of an imagined community.
