Abstract

This paper deals with the subject of death and with some of the means on which we count in order to psychically process the idea. The awareness of death that places the human being above other species, marks him, at the
same time, with the helplessness of existential ignorance, compass for the wish to know that guides the search in science and in artistic production. As an opposing force, the longing to dis-regard the reality of death leads to multiple forms of disavowal, both at an individual and at a collective level. The paper provides examples of some works of art, the manifest erotic
character of which covers lacerations, different forms of emptiness, signs and symbols evoking death and which have been censored.
