This paper raises the question of the existence of a shared or common object which is constructed as the work within a group or institution progresses. The author takes as his starting point his clinical experience in three fields of professional activity: a therapeutic institution for children with psychological problems, the practice over a number of years of group psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and the setting-up and development of a training course for future psychoanalytic child and adolescent psychotherapists. Those who ran that course were all psychoanalysts, members of the IPA. Over a period of several years, they studied the specific way in which they worked and how they functioned internally. In the final part of the paper, the author highlights the obstacles that may hinder the construction of such an object and the potential pathological states that underlie the dynamics of that process.
